Peak Height Velocity
Managing rapid growth spurts is critical for young fast bowlers.
Understanding Growth Spurts
During Peak Height Velocity (PHV), a young cricketer's bones lengthen faster than muscles can adapt. This leads to a temporary loss of coordination—often called "adolescent awkwardness".
The Danger Zone
Fast bowlers are particularly at risk of lumbar stress fractures during this time. At Desert Cubs, we monitor height every 3 months. If a player grows more than 7cm a year, we reduce their bowling workload and focus on technique.
- Monitor height regularly
- Focus on core stability
- Reduce bowling volume during growth spurts
